One of our favorite castles in our corner of Germany is Trifels Castle. (German website about Trifels Castle) It’s about 40 kilometers from Ramstein Air Base just South of Annweiler, Germany. It’s just over an hour drive away. It is one of the most popular tourist spots in the Rhineland-Palatinate.
Why is Trifels Castle so popular?
It’s one of the older castles not in ruins and it has some interesting history. The first record of the castle was in 1081. King Richard 1 of England (Richard the Lionheart) was imprisoned here for several weeks in 1193.
The castle was destroyed by fire caused by a lightning strike in 1602. It was used as a refuge during the Thirty Years War until 1635. After the bubonic plague, or Black Death, in the mid 1600s, the castle was abandoned.
What happened to it after it was abandoned?
The local population used the stones from the castle for building homes. By 1866, the Trifelsverein (Trifels association) was formed and stopped the theft of stones from the castle. In 1938, the restoration of the castle began. The original appearance of the castle was not known. Rudolf Esterer designed the castle as it is today. The final restoration began in 1954 but wasn’t completed until the mid 1970s due to a lack of funding. So what is the castle like today?

You can wander around the castle rooms and explore. It’s fantastic for children to discover the castle. There are replicas of the Imperial Regalia of the Holy Roman Empire. The main hall has an interesting chandelier with candles. My favorite part of the castle is on the roof.
What’s on the roof of the castle?
The view is spectacular. It is a 360-degree view of the surrounding valley. I always feel like a bird flying high above the forest. The castle is just over 1000 feet above the city of Annweiler. I could spend hours there enjoying the wind and the quiet. It’s a great place to bring your camera.
I found website with a panoramic view from the top of the castle. Click on the “Panoramabilder von der Burg Trifels” link to see it on this website.
How do we get to the castle?
Once you are in Annweiler, you’ll see signs to Trifels. You can see it to the South East of the town and it’s easy to see because it towers over the town. You’ll end up driving several kilometers in the forest as you climb up towards the castle. It’s a nice drive when all of the leaves are on the trees.
You’ll come to the parking lot eventually. Have a few Euros ready because parking is not free. The entrance fees are cheap. Entrance prices are 3 Euros per adult and 1.50 Euros for a child.
After you pay for your ticket, you have a bit of walking to do. The castle is on a steep hill and you have to walk up to it. It is definitely worth the walk though. You won’t regret it.
After your visit, you can grab a bite to eat and drink at the restaurant across from the parking lot. It’s a great way to end your visit to a most interesting castle.
PS: The picture at the start of the article is of an F-4E Phantom based at Ramstein Air Base in 1982. I completed training as an F-4E weapon system officer at George AFB, CA before I went to pilot training so this picture has a special meaning to me.
